Artist Analysis: James Nader

This is one of James Nader’s photos. It is of a woman’s profile. I like this shot in relation to the theme. The woman is standing at an angle and her face looks tough; giving off a masculine pose and expression. However,  in contrast to the super 1980’s power woman inspired styling and strong make-up, the masculine pose and expression become very womanly.

Pictures and more after the jump.

I particularly do not like the lighting in the photo. The picture was taken with a flash so a shadow outline of the model is created behind her. Personally, I find that using a flash can make a photo look ‘cheap’ or less sophisticated; but when used right, can enforce an ‘edge’ to it.

This is another photo from James Nader’s collection. What I like about this photo is, once again, its simplicity. The male model is doing almost nothing yet is still able to appear extremely masculine. It goes to show that gender bias’ are not conveyed through over- exaggerated poses and expressions.
The contrasting colours in the photo are good. I like how the dark colours in the hair and eyes hits the light tones of his face.
Furthermore, the depth of field in the photo is good. Because the subject is easily identified due to the out of focus background scenery.
